About the International Union: The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) is a progressive, diversified trade union that primarily represents operating engineers, who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes, and in the service industries. IUOE also represents nurses and other health industry workers, a significant number of public employees engaged in a wide variety of occupations, as well as a number of job classifications in the petrochemical industry.
About the Local Union: IUOE Local 3 represents roughly 35,000 members across California, Hawaii, Utah and Nevada, making them the largest construction trades local in the U.S. Among their members are heavy-equipment operators, public employees, surveyors, inspectors and those working in the craft and maintenance division.
About the JATC: Possibly the most advanced JATC in the country, the California Operating Engineers Journeyman and Apprentice Training Center offers free tuition and training to Operating Engineer apprentices and journeymen. The JATC trains apprentices and journeymen both in the classroom and on a 40-acre equipment training area. Their journeymen instructors are required to attend advanced instructor training courses through the International Union of Operating Engineers so their program can remain prestigious.
